"For a long time I've wanted to make a fantasy story for children inspired by my biggest inspirations Brian Froud and John Bauer. The work of these two artists often portrays fantastical creatures, living as part of or hidden amongst the natural world, often unseen by the human eye. I was always inspired by this notion... that there may be things living out there in the trees that we simply don't know about. And so the story I have developed is of a young boy lost in a dense forest, who happens across one of these esoteric creatures, with unexpected results.
I hold the idea of the “folk tale” very close to my heart, growing up watching The Storyteller by Jim Henson and Antony Minghella . I have yet to come across another television series that so poignantly portrays traditional folk tales. The feel and tone of this series most definitely had an impact on the creation of this project, though I wanted to try and capture my own unique atmosphere in an original, contemporary folk tale of my own design.
I believe that the final degree project is potentially the one time in your career that you are able to make a film solely of your own invention. In light of this, I feel it's important to really throw yourself at this project, so that you end up with a short film that speaks volumes about who you are as a budding professional."
